Always Room for Goodness Chapter Summary:

Panthoi was a ten-year-old girl. She always asked many questions about many things to her grandfather. She asked if men are basically good or bad and if she should love men generally. The grandfather told her that he would tell her some stories to enable her to draw her own conclusion from those stories.

He started narrating a story to her. Once, a Manipuri man called Khagemba went to the University of Delhi for personal business on a train. At that time, he saw a man watching him attentively in his compartment. He regarded the man as a thief. But the man helped him instead of stealing his things. Khagemba asked him why he was so concerned about him. The man replied that he had a brother who resembled him. He was an army officer, and he was killed in Kashmir. He told him that human beings should help one another.

The grandfather narrated another story to her. Chandra and his niece Bina went to Trichur, a small town in Kerala, on a train. They met Mr. Nair from Kerala and within a short period, they became friends. He wanted to help Chandra and Bina; he did not get off at his own hometown. He knew that many rogues might pounce on them if they knew they were innocent strangers. At the medical college, things were very easy for them.

After the grandfather had finished narrating that story to his granddaughter, he began another story about the goodness of men. When four young men from Manipur went to Kolkata from Bangalore on a train, they met a Bengali couple with their three children in the same compartment. At a station, the Bengali gentleman got off the train to buy some things. At that time, his money was stolen by some pickpockets. So, they were very unhappy. On knowing their difficulty, the four young Manipuris helped them by giving them five hundred rupees. The grandfather concluded by saying that a common human bond of love and desire to help each other runs through every human being.
